Austria, June 24 - July 3 2009

Question: An unusual sight was noticed by Township residents passing by Washington Township High School the morning of June 24. They saw a crowd of students, parents and teachers wearing red tee shirts that read “WTHS Orchestra: Austria Trip Summer 2009”; lots of string instruments and other musical equipment; piles of luggage; and an over-sized tour bus. What was going on?

Answer: WTHS Orchestra students and parent chaperones, under the direction of WTHS Orchestra Director Judy Barnett and former Cherry Hill East Orchestra Director Bridget Kasinskas, were heading to JFK airport to fly to Vienna for a 10 day concert tour of Austria!

The group returned safe and sound on July 3 with photos, souvenirs, and stories to share with their families and friends and experiences they will remember for the rest of their lives. The tour was incredibly successful and exciting. The orchestra’s first of its 4 Austrian performances was in front of Vienna’s famous Schonbrunn Palace. The musicians were still jet-lagged and a bit nervous, but the large and enthusiastic crowd made them feel welcome and appreciated. Austrian audiences loved the all-American repertoire: Beach Boys songs, jazz standards, and selections by well-known American composers.

The trip also included plenty of time for sight-seeing. The group traveled on a beautiful double-decker bus owned and driven by Tony, the charming and accomplished bus driver. They went to Eisenstadt to visit Esterhazy Palace, where Joseph Haydn was the resident composer for 30 years and to Salzberg, Mozart’s hometown and the city of The Sound of Music. Next, the group traveled southward to visit and perform in 2 beautiful small towns in the Alps. One of the trip’s highlights was definitely taking a cable car ride to the top of one of the mountains and playing in the snow!

All the participants enjoyed the trip tremendously and agreed that the experience was an enriching once-in-a-lifetime event.
