Many orchestras are playing in our area - often with the help of WTHS students as musicians.  On this page, we feature orchestras such as the PYA, PYO, Philadelphia Sinfonia, GSPYO, RYO, All-State Orchestra, Rowan Youth Orchestra, Rowan University/Community Orchestra, Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, Settlement Music School, and Temple Music Prep - see who's playing in them and when they are performing.  Join an orchestra or catch a friend on stage!

The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (PYO) and Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra (PYA). The PYO has provided a professional level musical experience to gifted young instrumentalists for 59 years, thrilling audiences and critics alike around the globe. Its new companion ensemble, the Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra, was established under a grant from the Meet the Composer/Philadephia Music Project, supported by the Pew Charitable Trust and debuted to standing ovations in January,1996. Philadelphia Sinfonia.  The Philadelphia Sinfonia is an organization of locally recruited young musicians which present a concert series befitting the City of Philadelphia and her reputation for being one of America's principal cities for artistic activity. The Philadelphia Sinfonia aims to enhance the City's musical reputation further through outstanding musical performances.  We suggest that applicants should be proficient as follows: Bach A minor for violin; Telemann concerto for viola; Vivaldi sonatas for cello; comfortable up to fourth position for bass.  For more information on the Philadelphia Sinfonia, visit their web site at: http://www.philadelphiasinfonia.com/.

Garden State Pops Youth Orchestra Started in June, 1994 as an offshoot to the Garden State Pops Orchestra, the Garden State Pops Youth Orchestra provides students with symphonic literature that is normally not performed by a major symphony orchestra. The repertoire includes Movie scores, Broadway scores, and popular music in a symphonic setting.   We suggest that applicants should be proficient as follows: Vivaldi A minor for violin; Telemann concerto for viola; Suzuki Book 3 for cello; comfortable up to fourth position for bass.  For more information, visit their web site at: http://www.gspyo.com

Rowan Youth Orchestra First created in 1984, the Rowan University Youth Orchestra (RYO) is sponsored by the University's College of Performing Arts. Our purpose is to provide an opportunity for exceptional young musicians to expand their horizons and perform a musical repertoire beyond what is often found within their school environment.   We suggest that applicants should be at Suzuki Book 3 or higher.  For more information, visit their web site at: http://www.rowan.edu/open/ryo/

Rowan University/Community Orchestra The Rowan University/Community Orchestra is the official orchestra of Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ. The Orchestra consists of both students and members of the Glassboro community. Rehearsals are every Tuesday from 7-9:30PM in Wilson Hall, Room 156.Membership in the orchestra is determined by audition. Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey A community orchestra which plays a variety of music here in South Jersey.  Applicants should be very advanced students with substantial experience.  Audition request forms and season repertoire can be found at their web site at http://www.psnj.org/.

Temple Music Preparatory String Ensembles The Esther Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple have two string ensembles as part of their Center for Gifted Young Musicians.  These string ensembles rehearse on Saturday afternoons.  These ensembles are for serious students.  For more information, see their web site at http://www.temple.edu/boyer/musicprep/ 

Settlement Music School String Orchestra The Settlement Music School in Phildelphia has several levels of string orchestras that are open to high school students.  Repertoire is determined by the proficiency of the students and comprises both standard and contemporary literature.  Membership is by audition.  For more information, see their web site at http://www.smsmusic.org/Programs/ensembles.htm or contact David Rupp, String Orchestra Program Director, at 215 320-2600 ext. 2695. 

All-South Jersey High School Orchestra Sponsored by the South Jersey Band and Orchestra Directors Association, this orchestra features some of the best musicians in South Jersey.  Auditions are held in December and the concert is performed the following January.  For more information, visit their web site at: http://www.sjboda.org/

New Jersey All-State Orchestra Auditioning from only those musicians that have made it into one of the three regional orchestras, this orchestra is comprised of the best in the state.  Auditions are held in the spring and the concerts are performed the following fall.  For more information, visit their web site at: http://www.njmea.org/.
